Placeholder text has been the industry’s standard dummy content ever since the 1500s, when an unidentified printer seized a collection of type and jumbled it to produce a type example book. It has not only survived five centuries but also made the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unaltered. It was popularized in the 1960s with the launch of Letraset sheets containing placeholder text passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of placeholder text.
